Africa Senior Athletic Championship: We Will Not Disappoint Nigerians - Tobi Amusan

2022 Commonwealth gold medalist Tobi Amusan has expressed her confidence in the Nigerian athletic contingents as they get set for the Africa Athletic Championship event in Duala Cameroon.

The team Nigeria Athletes are going into the athletic event in Cameroon on the heels of the National Athletic Champions, which serves as a national preparation for both the Africa Athletics Championship and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“We are Nigerians and our aim is to show that spirit of we can do it. It’s a national assignment, no one is bigger than the country and it’s my obligation to be here” she said.

The Athletic Federation Of Nigeria (AFN) released a strong shortlists of forty Nigerian athletes {20 males and 20 females competitors} who will be flying the country’s flag at the Africa Athletics Championship in Duala, Cameroon.

The Nigeria contingents who left Lagos on Thursday 20th June 2024 to Duala, Cameroon include some big names, such as 27 years old Tobi Amusan who is the current Commonwealth and African Champion in the 100 metres hurdles, 21 years old Favour Chukwuka Ofili who was an Olympic silver medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham, England, 2019 African games champion and the reigning Nigerian National Sports Festival Champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and two-time African Championships bronze medallist in the 400 metres Chidi Okezie were all among the shortlists that will be representing country in the athletic event in Cameroon.

Furthermore, Nigerian Sports Minister, Senator John Ewan Enoh has urged the team Nigeria athletes to use the Africa Athletics Championship as an avenue to get fully prepared for the 2024 Olympic game in Paris.

The Honorable Minister of Sports Development in a statement on Thursday, through the ministry of sports media aid, Diana Mary Nsan enjoined the Nigeria Athletes to see the Africa Athletic Championship in Duala, Cameroon as a perfect opportunity to prepare for the Olympic Games coming up later this year in Paris.

The sports Minister reiterated the importance of the Africa Athletic Championship to the Nigeria contingent and stressed how the championship has served as an avenue for athletes to get fully ready for greater height at Olympic Games and some other world’s biggest sporting events.

“The African Athletics Championship should serve as a dress rehearsal for the Olympics,” Enoh stated.

“I charge all our flag bearers to represent the green and white flag with pride and aim to bring back the first position trophy at the end of the tournament.” he added.

The Sports Minister further advised the athletes to be cautious of their diets and hydration to avoid getting themselves into danger or risk as they will be facing thorough scrutiny in this Olympic year.
