Spain booked their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 as a Riccardo Calafiori 55th minute own goal in the second half gave them a 1-0 win over Italy at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday night.
Atlectic Bilbao winger Nico Williams put up a man of the match performance after his sublime cross hit Calafiori and slotted into his own net.
The result means the three time European champions and 2010 FIFA World Cup champions have clinched top spot in Group B with with six points after winning their first two groups B games against Croatia and Italy, scoring total of four goals and conceded none.
Italy will probably join them in the last 16 stage as long as they avoid defeat in their next match against Croatia on Monday 24th June 2024
The Croatian team on the other hands has one point in its hands and would be desperately looking to for a win against the Italian side which will be enough to see them through in the knockout stage as one of the best losers team.
